Every photograph tells a story but when your subject has four paws, a wagging tail, and an endless supply of personality, that story becomes even more unforgettable.
During the Dog Days of Summer, we’re excited to feature Carmen Gonzalez, founder of NYC Pet Pawtographer whose passion for dogs and photography has transformed into one of New York City’s premier pet photography businesses.
From playful puppies to beloved senior dogs, Carmen has dedicated her career to preserving the moments pet owners never want to forget. We sat down with her to learn about her journey, creative process, and why printing your pet’s portraits is just as important as taking them.
Tell us a little about yourself and how you started out in photography.
A few years ago, I made a major life change and left my career to pursue one of my greatest passions: photography. I started out as a street photographer in New York City, capturing the everyday stories and moments that make the city so unique.
As someone who has always had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, it wasn’t long before my camera naturally gravitated toward them. I jokingly say I started “stalking” people on the streets just so I could photograph their pups! Before long, dog parents began complimenting my photos and asking if they could purchase them.
My best friend and my brother both encouraged me to turn that passion into a business, and I’m incredibly grateful I listened. Becoming a pet photographer has allowed me to combine two of the things I love most: animals and photography.
Today, several years later, that passion has grown into a business that has expanded beyond New York to Puerto Rico and France. I feel incredibly fortunate to spend my days creating lasting memories for pets and the people who love them
What inspired you to focus exclusively on pet photography?
Pets are family.They celebrate our happiest moments, comfort us during difficult times, and love us unconditionally. They deserve to be photographed with the same care and artistry that we reserve for weddings, newborns, or family portraits.
Every dog has a personality that’s completely unique, and I love discovering what makes each one special.
What’s your favorite part of your sessions?
Watching a dog’s personality unfold.Some dogs are energetic and playful from the moment they arrive. Others are shy and need a little extra time to trust me. Once they relax, that’s when the magic happens.
Those authentic expressions, the curious head tilt, the joyful smile, the look they give their favorite human, those are the moments I live for.
Pet Photography can be unpredictable, how do you handle that?
Patience is everything. I never expect dogs to perform on command. Instead, I work with them, allowing plenty of time for breaks, treats, and play. Every session moves at the dog’s pace. The less pressure they feel, the more natural and expressive the photographs become.
What do you hope your clients feel when they receive their photographs?
Joy! I want them to see more than a beautiful portrait. I want them to remember a chapter of their lives.Our pets are with us for such a short time compared to our own lives, and photographs become one of the most meaningful ways to keep those memories alive.
Why is printing your photographs so important?
Digital files are wonderful, but they often stay hidden on phones or hard drives. Printed photographs become part of your everyday life. Whether it’s a framed portrait on your wall or a beautifully crafted photo book sitting on your coffee table, those images become lasting reminders of the love you shared. Years from now, those photo prints will mean even more than they do today.
What’s next for you?
The adventure is just getting started. I’m excited to continue telling meaningful stories, meeting incredible pets, and creating artwork that families will treasure for generations.
One of my upcoming highlights is traveling back to Paris, where I’ll once again photograph dogs against some of the city’s most beautiful and iconic backdrops. Every city has its own unique canine culture, and I love capturing the personalities of dogs wherever my work takes me. No matter where I am from the streets of New York City to the parks and cafés of Paris the most rewarding part of my work is hearing from clients years later who tell me their photographs have become some of their most cherished possessions. Knowing these images continue to bring joy long after the session is what inspires me to keep creating.
