A Hobby Lobby Portrait Shoot

Author: Libby - Printique by Adorama

There’s a saying in the photography industry that a true photographer works with what he or she has because it’s all about skill and creativity, not equipment.  There is no need to have the most expensive camera gear or the most picturesque location/studio to work. We want to introduce you to one photographer who rocked this mantra. Meet Adam Delane the photographer who used Hobby Lobby as his studio for a portrait shoot.

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, my name is Adam Delane. I am a freelance photographer, model and head photographer for OMOXO. I am from Cincinnati Ohio soon relocating to Florida. I’ve been a photographer for 4 years and have traveled to over 10 states and Puerto Rico doing photography.

You recently did an amazing photo shoot in your local Hobby Lobby, how did you come up with this idea?

I give my loyal followers the credit. They always push me to do more and be creative and they tagged me to a funny meme that said: “Instagram VS Snapchat” which looked to be taken in Hobby Lobby. One photo looking rough and behind the scenes of a shoot and the other, a close-cropped image, clean and neat. I still don’t know which one was supposed to be Snapchat or Instagram. (You can see the original meme by @_KelseyMaggart on Twitter) They urged me to really do a shoot inside of hobby lobby.

Tell us about the photo shoot.

I always try to think outside the box when planning photo shoots. So I came up with the plan to do the shoot inside the Hobby Lobby store but make it seem as if we were outside in a flower garden. I have great photoshop (editing software) skills so I knew I could achieve that Sunset glow and the darker tones in other photos as if the sun were already down over the horizon. Some people thought those were phone pictures and edited with some app. But nope. My professional Canon 7D camera and Photoshop. It took us two days and two separate stores to achieve everything. Surprisingly, none of the staff seemed to mind. They walked past and didn’t say a word. We just had a feeling they were going to kick us out each time one walked by.

What advice would you like to give to photographers who are stuck in a creative rut?

Follow other creatives. Nothing is more inspiring and creativity sparking than seeing another creative (what we call people who create whether photographer, videographer, painter, etc) create great looking works of art. Always challenge yourself, always learn (youtube is the best teacher I know), and NEVER worry or care what other people might say! I was told my whole career that my images are “too much” or “over the top” but I know that one day someone would see them and appreciate them.
