Light, Empathy, and Style in the Vulnerability of Photography

Author: Gabrielle Grace

A Day in Chinatown, Manhattan with Jonny Edward

In the heart of Chinatown, we met with photographer Jonny Edward to explore what makes his work feel so timeless, personal, and emotionally resonant. What we discovered was more than technique—it was heart. Jonny speaks openly about stepping in front of the camera to better understand his subjects, using vulnerability as a guide, and letting intuition shape every light, shadow, and moment.

Our goal was to learn more about Jonny Edward as a creative: his interests, his advice for photographers, and his direction in lighting, subject matter, art direction, and print. He certainly delivered. His profound knowledge, from working with shadow to underpainting with light, and his message to trust one’s own creativity—even when it feels like a risk—can be applied to all creative fields and beyond. Check out the full interview below and be prepared to be inspired.

If you would like to see more of Jonny’s work in his finished album, you can check it out HERE.
