You don’t have to be a professional to take amazing photos of your baby. Take a look at some great photographs that capture those treasured memories forever.
Babies are fascinating, ever-changing subjects to shoot with a camera. The right angle or focus can yield an amazing photo of an infant: all you need is a camera in the right place at the right time. Here are our cutest picks — both amateur and professional.

Baby Kinsley, by Craig Miller

In this picture, you can truly feel the baby’s lightness. There’s even a sense of suspension, created by the baby’s horizontal positioning and the vertical frame. With the focal point of the photograph just below the middle of the photo, our tiny subject gives off the angelic impression that she’s flying.
The downward lighting and the baby’s matching downward gaze add grounding to the suspension. The strong black background also grounds the piece, while the soft, diffuse light brings the baby’s lightness and softness into focus. All in all, it’s an ingenious visual impression of one quality that’s essential to capturing this time in a child’s life: his or her lightness.

This level of closeness and detail is one that we rarely have a chance to appreciate, and it’s ideal for a baby photo. Not only can you make out each and every eyelash — you can make out the light beginnings of an eyebrow, too! The small bumps and the soft, round fullness of the skin give the figure away as a baby, something the viewer could never tell by the eyelashes alone.
The most intriguing part of the photo has to be the eye itself. The reflection isn’t clear enough to show exactly what the baby is seeing, and we experience the same sense of wonder and intrigue that the tiny tot seems to be emanating.

Amalie studying her big brother, by Lars Plougmann

The photographer captures the fragile vulnerability of this baby through the use of natural lighting and focus.
The strong diagonal trajectory brings the natural emphasis of the photo to the baby’s face, with her brother’s gaze in secondary focus. The diagonal cradle and downward lighting further strengthen this impression, and the baby’s gaze, tilted upward against the downward trajectory, draws in a fragile, yet piercing focus.
The dim natural light on the baby’s face, sheltered by the boy’s shadow, emphasizes the baby’s fragility. The focus emphasizes her relative size to her surroundings, and the clear cradle further underscores her fragility.

The emotional power of this two-day-old’s gaze is stunning. The barely-open eyes and slightly open mouth emanate the sense of openness, curiosity, and peacefulness of being half-awake.
The baby’s eyes immediately draw in the focus of the photograph. His dark pupils contrast with the soft, light colors of the foreground. The natural white light and his white swaddle blanket and hat bring out the small, bright glimmer of light in his eyes.
Against the soft, solid color of the bed, you can almost see the tiny red blood vessels beneath the baby’s skin. Without a color filter, you can feel how fragile and new the baby is, making his gaze all the more stunning.
