Every photograph tells a story, but some hold a lifetime of meaning in a single frame.
In our new Behind the Photo series, we’re asking people to share the one printed photograph they could never replace and the memories, emotions, and moments that make it so special. These are the images that become part of our homes, our families, and our identities. They’re more than pictures; they’re reminders of where we’ve been, who we love, and the moments that continue to shape us.
For this feature, we’re talking with photographer, Michael Durr whose most treasured photograph was captured long before he could remember it. Taken by his mother at a quiet lake in Minnesota, the image shows a young child being held by his father in a moment that lives on not through memory, but through feeling. Years later, after becoming a parent himself, the photograph has taken on an even deeper significance, connecting generations through a shared love of family, water, and simple moments together.
Why is this the most meaningful printed photo in your collection?
This photo was taken of my dad and I by my mom at a lake in Minnesota. I was too young to remember this moment, but this photo really evokes emotion for me. Despite not remembering this moment I can feel this photo when I look at it.
Why was it important to you to print this image instead of leaving it on your phone or computer?
I have a copy of this image on my phone and computer as well, but looking at it on a screen does not have the same feeling as when I see it displayed on a shelf with other tangible items that are also important to me. However, having that digital copy is a great thing because should anything ever happen to this printed image I would have the ability to reprint it. Using devices in that way is a nice safety net in the preservation of important photographs.
Where do you display this photo, and why did you choose that location?
I keep this photo in a frame on a shelf in my office and it has other objects around it that are important to me. The image is a good reminder that even the smallest moments could have a lasting impact.
Has the meaning of this photograph changed over time? If so, how?
The photo has changed as I have gotten older and had my own boys. I look a lot like my dad and he was probably younger than I am now in this photo. Both of my boys love the water and love having me toss them in the air. It looks like I had that same love. I have even recreated this image with my boys.
What advice would you give someone who has meaningful photos but hasn’t printed them yet?
Printing photos is the number one way to preserve memories. When loved ones pass away we don’t go into their phones to look at photos they captured. We walk the halls, we sit in the rooms and we touch the objects that remind us of the special people and impactful moments. The process of selecting an image to print and display is a great exercise as it helps you to focus on what images resonate with you or with others.
